Mars Hill smoothie shop serves as community hub for students

MARS HILL – Downtown Mars Hill now has a smoothie and tea shop for residents to grab a nice drink, though for some students the shop is much more than just a shop.

Kimmy Lunsford, owner of Elevate Nutrition, rents the building at 28 Cascade Street. She previously worked at a similar smoothie shop in Weaverville.

“I was at a fit camp many years ago,” Lunsford said. “They had a club like that and then I tried it before and it didn’t work. I said, ‘God willing, it will happen when it’s done.’ Then someone found this place for me, and here we are.”

The shop offers a wide range of shakes, teas and coffees.

“Caramel Pecan Pie is our favorite shake flavor and Skittles is our favorite tea or sour patches,” Lunsford said, adding that the store is working on its fall menu, which will include apple, cinnamon and pumpkin spice flavors.

A number of students and Lunsford’s family members helped complement the menu. Lunsford said she also consults Pinterest to find her yummy ideas.

Among the contributors to the menu were her mother, her husband Dominique and a number of students including Autumn Rice and Katie Bennett, who is a sophomore at the university.

Elevate Nutrition in downtown Mars Hill offers a unique selection of shakes and teas as well as coffee.

Rice and Bennett are two members of a tight-knit group of current and former students who frequent the store.

“It’s a nutrition club,” Lunsford said. “We can weigh people. We can do a body analysis that measures your BMI, recommended calorie intake, and body fat and uses those numbers to tell you how old your body feels.”

The shop offers pre-workout and post-workout shakes, as well as nutritional supplements and products for women’s health, men’s health, beauty, weight loss, hydration, heart health, child health, digestive health, stress management and energy.
